Malden River Works Salt Shed & Boathouse Project Updates

Committee to review and approve a proposal (dated 9/14/26 from McPhail Associates, attached) for additional boring prior to bidding in order to facilitate the switch to timber piles.

  • The proposal requests approval to do additional subsurface investigation at the proposed structures to further delineate the soil conditions through the full length of the timber piles
  • McPhail will perform 2-3 borings to document the subsurface soil and groundwater conditions, 40-60 feet down or to practical refusal, whichever happens first
  • Borings will take 2 days to complete, but McPhail needs 6-7 weeks from approval for the report because driller books 3-4 weeks out and then the report will take 2-3 weeks to write
  • Lump sum fee for everything is $19,500
  • Steve noted that McPhail should start borings at the boathouse, as that is the location where no boring data exists currently
  • The group agreed that these additional borings are necessary to ensure that project costs are as low as possible (if timber piles don't work, the alternatives are much more expensive)
  • Steve motioned to approve the proposal. Peg seconded the motion, and the motion was unanimously approved via roll call vote.
  • Nelson will sign the proposal as chair.
