Malden Cultural Council

Meeting Minutes – May 20, 2026 @ 6:00 p.m.

In attendance - Crystal Beauchemin, Secretary - James Genzale, Treasurer - Danya Goodman - Leilani Ricardo, Co-Chair - Edward Rocha - Sue Tufts, Co-Chair

The meeting was called to order at 6:06 by Sue Tufts

  1. Open meeting and roll call

  2. Approval of Minutes of February 26, 2026, meeting [6:07] – Motion to approve via Rocha. Seconded via Ricardo. Passed

  3. Co-chair election and membership. [6:09] Two council members had stepped down. Jim and Sue interviewed 4 out of 15 applicants. Mayoral Appointment. Position will be offered this week hopefully. Most interested in candidates at this time with social media, web, communications experience. Leilani had agreed to co-chair through May. Determined we can wait until Nov to fill- but will be rotating full leadership out again. This new timing was the determination of the new cohort, making June to June co-chairing. At the meeting, no one was ready to co-chair.

  4. Grant liaison feedback [6:20] Leilani flagged an application with program revision regarding a video showing and talk with documentarian. Sue agreed it may be a substantial grant change. If decided that it is a substantial change, we have to reallocate and have them talk to us and review. Sue would reach out to Greg to ensure process. Grant is 3 events for programming- shifting to cover just one of them. Leilani will request clarification. Everyone was reminded to continue their grantee outreach.

  5. MACFest update [Danya 6:35] – MACFest date: July 11 with rain date of July 12. 12-4pm. Courtyard City Hall. Fiscal sponsor- Onstage dance company- which would have to be paid. The original plan had been to do fundraising, but was determined that can only be done in year prior to be applied to future years. (MA Cultural Council says it is not their policy.) There is $6k allocated to MACFest from Mayor. Concerns about chairs and other costs led to discussion about fund usage from administrative line item. (Approx $1200 – which was reserved for web/Mailchimp etc.) Determined we would allocate approx. $500 from admin fund toward MACFest. Call for Performers had been posted and sent to grantees. Discussed details pertaining to volunteers, table fees and Maplewood Events processes.

  6. Social Media updates [6:55] Posting to Instagram more regularly. No one really posting to FB. Leilani has Facebook access management which needs to be transferred. The council should formalize who has access/admin allowance and process for revolving/management.

  7. Local Priorities updates and Community Survey [7pm] Held meeting in April with Greg from MACC. Sue had created a survey, requesting feedback. Survey will be distributed to help inform LCC guidelines and next round of applications.

Motion to adjourn at 7:08pm.
